First Aid Refresher and Requalification: When to Renew, What’s Involved, and How to Stay Compliant
If you manage first aid cover or act as a named first aider, renewals can creep up faster than you think. Certificates last for three years, but skills fade much sooner. The result can be a compliance gap that leaves your team exposed and you scrambling for last-minute places.
This guide gives you a straight-talking renewal roadmap. You will know exactly when to refresh, what each option involves, what to do if a certificate lapses, and how to plan ahead so cover never dips. SEF First Aid Assistance can run refreshers nationwide at your site or at our Halifax base, making scheduling simpler for managers and easier for learners.
The essentials: FAW, EFAW, and paediatric timelines
- First Aid at Work (FAW) Level 3: valid for 3 years. To renew the full FAW, book the 2-day First Aid at Work Requalification before expiry, or within 1 month after expiry. Between 1 and 3 months post-expiry, you can still attend the 2-day requalification if special considerations are agreed (for example, an employer letter explaining why the learner does not require the full 3-day course). After 3 months, you will typically need the full 3-day FAW again.
- Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Level 3: valid for 3 years. There is no shorter requalification route. To stay qualified, complete the full 1-day course again before the 3-year mark.
- Paediatric First Aid (including blended): valid for 3 years. For Ofsted and Early Years Foundation Stage compliance, re-take the full course by the expiry date.
Across all these, annual refresher training is strongly recommended. It keeps CPR, AED, bleeding control, and incident management skills sharp, and supports confidence under pressure between formal requalification points.
If you need EFAW details or to book an Emergency First Aid at Work course, see our overview of first aid at work training. You can also organise an in-house course for your first aiders if you prefer your own dates and location.
What the annual refresher covers vs the 2-day FAW requalification
Annual refresher (typically half-day to 1 day):
- Focus on high-impact, must-remember skills. Adult CPR and AED use, recovery position, choking, serious bleeding, shock, seizures, and incident management.
- Updates on protocol changes since your last course.
- Scenario practice to reinforce decision-making, communication, and teamwork.
- Confidence building, including how to regulate your own stress response and support others after an incident.
FAW Requalification (2 days):
- A structured, assessed renewal for current FAW holders whose certificates are due to expire or have recently expired.
- Full practical and written assessment over 2 days, including the broader FAW syllabus: primary survey, secondary assessment, CPR and AED, choking, bleeding, shock, injuries (head, spinal, fractures), illnesses, burns, poisoning, and more.
- Integrates any protocol updates since your last FAW.
- Successful completion renews FAW for another 3 years.
Refresher training does not extend the expiry date of your qualification. It keeps your skills current between qualification and requalification.
Lapses, special considerations, and what to do next
If your FAW lapses:
- Up to 1 month after expiry: you can attend the 2-day FAW Requalification.
- 1 to 3 months after expiry: you may still attend the 2-day requalification if special considerations are agreed with the training provider (for example, a signed employer letter).
- Beyond 3 months: expect to re-take the full 3-day FAW.
If your EFAW or Paediatric First Aid lapses:
- You will usually need to re-take the full course to regain the qualification.
If you are unsure, email info@seffirstaidassistance.co.uk with your dates and role. We will advise the simplest compliant route.

FAQ: straight answers to common questions
- How often do you have to do a first aid refresher? Annually is strongly recommended across FAW, EFAW, and Paediatric First Aid to keep skills sharp.
- How long is a first aid refresher valid? A refresher boosts competence but does not change your qualification expiry, which remains 3 years from achievement for FAW, EFAW, and Paediatric First Aid.
- What happens if my first aid certificate expires? For FAW, you have up to 1 month to attend the 2-day requalification, and up to 3 months with special considerations. After that, take the full 3-day FAW. For EFAW and Paediatric First Aid, you typically repeat the full course.
- Can you fail a 3 day first aid course? Assessment is ongoing and there are written elements. Most learners pass with guidance and practice. If some criteria are not met, trainers provide support and re-assessment routes where appropriate.
- How quickly can I get a first aid certificate? Open course places can sometimes be available at short notice. For urgent cover, ask about upcoming dates or arrange an on-site group course to accelerate scheduling.
