SEF First Aid Assistance featured by Junior Grassroots Hub

We’re delighted to have been featured in a new article on the Junior Grassroots Hub (JGH) news page, Pitch-Side Ready: CPR and Defib Training for Junior Clubs. We’re glad to have the chance to share how we can help junior football clubs feel prepared for an emergency on and off the pitch.

Why junior football?

Every weekend, thousands of junior matches take place a long way from the nearest ambulance. If a player collapses or is badly hurt, the first people on hand are the coaches, team managers, parents and volunteers on the touchline. We want those people to feel ready.

What we’re offering clubs

We now deliver hands-on CPR and defibrillator sessions straight to junior football clubs. Each 90-minute session covers:

  • Chest compressions and rescue breaths, practised on training manikins
  • How to use a defibrillator, with hands-on training units
  • Pitch-side emergencies common in junior football, such as head injuries, severe bleeding and airway problems, tailored to what your club wants to focus on

Every attendee receives a CPD-suitable certificate. We come to your clubhouse or training venue, so there’s no venue to hire and no travel for your volunteers. Sessions can be arranged on a weekday, evening or weekend to fit around training and fixtures.

Experience with young people

Our sister company, Flat Stan First Aid, has trained more than 200,000 children through workshops in primary schools, secondary schools, SEND schools and pupil referral units across the UK. That experience of working with young people is what we bring to grassroots football.

Three things every junior club can do now

  1. Remember that children aren’t small adults. Child CPR differs from adult CPR in both technique and sequence, so make sure your volunteers are trained to cover it.
  2. If in doubt, sit them out. Anyone with a suspected concussion should come off the pitch and not return that day. Agree this as a club before the season starts.
  3. Register your defibrillator. If your club has one, add it to The Circuit, the British Heart Foundation’s national defibrillator network, so ambulance services can direct 999 callers to it.
