SEF First Aid Assistance Highlights Mental Health First Aid at Pennine GP Alliance PLT Event

We are delighted to share that our director, Simon Ferris, was invited to speak at yesterday’s Protected Learning Time (PLT) event, organised by the Pennine GP Alliance.

The event took place at The Venue Bowers Mill in Barkisland, bringing together around 250 primary care non-clinical professionals from across the region. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the dedicated staff who form the backbone of our local healthcare practices.

Simon delivered an engaging and vital presentation focusing on the growing importance of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) in the workplace and wider community.

Why Mental Health First Aid Matters in Primary Care

Non-clinical staff—including receptionists, administrators, and practice managers—are almost always the first point of contact for patients entering a GP surgery. They frequently interact with individuals experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, or acute distress.

Providing these teams with Mental Health First Aid training ensures they can:

  • Recognise early signs of mental health struggles or crises.
  • Respond confidently and empathetically without absorbing the stress themselves.
  • Guide individuals safely towards the right professional support.

Did you know?
Mental Health First Aid is just as critical as physical first aid. Knowing how to intervene during a panic attack or a mental health crisis can change—and save—lives.
